Westlife Net Chat

Transcript of a Net Chat held on capitalfm.com, August 1999

Shane, Nicky, Bryan, Kian and Mark from Westlife had a great time on Monday chatting with you all. If you missed out or you want to see if the lads answered your questions, read the highlights here.

crusty> So, what are you guys doing in London at the moment?
Kian> We're just doing promotion for our new single 'If I Let You Go'which is out today so go buy it!

anamcara> Did you guys enjoy presenting SMTV and CDUK?
Kian> Yes it was fantastic, one of the best experiences we ever had.
Shane> It was a brilliant experience.

HOTSTUFF> Your new song is gorgeous - does it mean anything personally to any of you?
Bryan> The lyrics to the latest single have a personal meaning to me but they're private.
Mark> The way we like to sing our songs, one line can mean one thing to one person and mean a different thing to someone else. It's not about personally experiences to all of us we just really liked the song.

Debi> Hi Westlife! Do you ever use chat on the internet?
Kian> Yes we sometimes chat on our own website, but no one believes it's us.

vikkie> What's the story about the salt and the mobile phone?
Kian> Ask Shane
Shane> The salt and the mobile story. The boys put salt in my mobile phone for a joke but it wasn't very funny.

CHARLY> HOW DID U FIRST MEET RONAN
Mark> Louis Walsh our manager and Boyzone's manager thought it would be good to chat to Ronan and find out all about the business. We met him in a hotel last March in Dublin and that's where it all started with Ronan.

SUGAR> Is ronan an ispiration to you all?
Mark> Yeah in certain ways he is, he's been singing professionally for six years and we've only being doing it a couple of years. He can give us good advice from experience but we still try to be original in our own ways.

Sprog> Does continuously being compared to BZ and all the other boy bands tick u off?
Kian> Sometimes but it's a privilege to be compared to bands like that but our own personality and image will come out as time goes on.

fifi> When are you touring?
Kian> We hope to tour the UK next March but nothing is confirmed yet. It all depends on the success of the album.

crusty> Who's the most interesting famous person you've met so far?
Shane> Bryan Adams was the most famous person I met we had a chat and he was really interesting I met him at TOTP and we had a photo together for the magazine.

AlottaFagina> If any of you wanted to go into acting what kind of film would you prefer?
Mark> Definitely a comedy like Naked Gun or the Nutty Professor. I think they're great films. I'd love to be in Friends as well.

fifi> Do you have nicknames for each other, if so, what are they?
Kian> We've got Spice names for each other, mine is Kian 'Blondie' spice, Bryan is 'Forgetful' spice, Mark is 'Homesick' spice , Shane is 'Country' spice and Nicky is 'Goalie' spice.

Silvermoon> The world's going to end, you have one wish. What would it be?
Bryan> My one wish would be to spend the time at home with my family.

anamcara> Nicky how many goals did you let in as goalkeeper at Leeds?
Nicky> Far too many!

anamcara> How are you families reacting to your fame?
Mark> For the little bit of fame we have they are very happy for us. It's good to have the support of your family when your trying to make it in this industry.

Silvermoon> If you couldn't be in Westlife, which band would you be in?
Bryan> If I couldn't be in Westlife I'd like to be in S Club 7!!
Shane> The Corrs of course.

BIANCA> Whats been the highlight of the last year?
Bryan> The highlight for me was getting number one.
Shane> Party in the Park, because last year we watched it in a hotel and wished that one day we could play there and the wish came true.
Mark> Getting to number one and winning the Smash Hits awards and getting this far so quick. There hasn't been just one highlight everything has been so cool.

BIANCA> Shane are you upset that Catherine Zeta Jones has got engaged to Michael Douglas?
Shane> No I think every body has to meet a partner. Good luck to Michael the lucky lucky man

anamcara> Who do you most admire?
Shane> I most admire Michael Douglas

SUGAR> You are now admired by so many people and can't walk down the street without people screaming at you - is there a place you go to 'hide' and get away from it all?
Mark> We can walk down the street on our own without people noticing us. If the five of us walk down the street together people recognise us. We go home to get away from it all. At home everyone is so friendly and we know everyone so no one really follows us around, they just stop and say hello and chat.

stephnz> How much of the countries you visit do you actually get to see?
Mark> We don't get to see very much of the countries at all, we're a new band just starting off and we have to do every bit of promotion that we can, so we go from one TV show to another and spend most of our time in cars.
Kian> We actually get to see very very few countries it's normally the airport, taxi and hotel! We do get to see a few places though, we got to see the Sydney opera house and a few other big landmarks.

vikkie> What's life like living out of a suitcase?
Kian> Life out of a suitcase is just really tiring.
Nicky> Horrible, I hate it but I don't hate what I'm doing because the positives outway the negatives. I'm a very lucky person, one of the luckiest in the world.
Lisa_popbabe> What do you think is the best part of your job???
Mark> Being on stage is the best part of it all and seeing people clapping and singing the words back to you in the audience. Getting the crowd going is a great feeling. You get to meet a lot of nice people too.
Kian> Travelling the world with your four best friends and doing a job that you love is the best part of this job.

SUGAR> What has been the scariest thing you have had to do since becoming pop stars?
Shane> Going on a fun fair ride in Copenhagen that shot you up 250 feet in about 2 seconds.
Kian> Party in the Park was the scariest thing, all those people! But I want to do something scarier like a parachute jump.

stephnz> What's the weirdest thing you've been given by a fan??
Nicky> Lots of things from jelly sweets to bras on stage!
Kian> The weirdest thing I've been given was some socks - Homer Simpson ones from a fan

Marlene> What do you think is the most important thing to achieve in life?
Kian> Happiness and love!

ESTELLE> What is your best feature?
Nicky> My toenails, that's why I wear sandals so much.
Kian> People tell me my best feature is my eyes.

SUGAR> If you had a million pounds which charity would you give it to?
Kian> I'd give it to a children's charity - not sure which one.
Nicky> Something to do with Cancer or AIDS, I lost an uncle to cancer a couple of years ago and he was very young.

anamcara> What award would mean the most to you?
Mark> A Grammy award or and MTV music award.
Shane> Probably Smash Hits Biggest Band in the World, or a World Music Award.

WendZ> Who gets the most fan mail then!?
Kian> The fan mail split is quite equal which is something we think is very good in the band.
Nicky> It's quite even because it changes in different countries people prefer either Mark or Shane or whoever,it depends where ever we go. I'm really popular in Spain.

hayhay> What's your favourite food?
Shane> Steak and Chips
Nicky> My Mam and my Nanna's cooking
Kian> I miss my mam's cooking an awful lot, I'm looking forward to going home soon for some.

Silvermoon> If money was no object what would you buy?
Nicky> I'd keep my family very wealthy and look after everybody. I'd buy a big house in the outskirts of Dublin and live happily ever after. I'd also buy myself a Ferrari 355 convertible.

Marlene> Who is the most romantic of you guys?
Nicky> Definitely me. No, I think we're all romantic in our own special way.
Kian> Everyone's going to say themselves and that they are the most romantic but I reckon it's me!
