Westlife: There's no war with Spice Girls

What's On TV video interview, October 2007

Mark - Well, he can answer for himself can't he...

[interviewer laughing]

Nicky - He's got a mouth, that's what got him into trouble.. Kian?!

Interviewer - Sorry Kian, what did you say?

Kian - Well no, I mean, obviously I was asked by a journalist what the whole situation was with us and the Spice Girls and I said we didn't know anything about it, er, the first thing we heard about it was in the newspaper, and obviously the conversation escalated, and she was like, "Well, what do you think of the girls?" and I said, "Well the girls are lovely," I said, "Mel C doesn't necessarily have anything nice to say about anybody," so, y'know, that was pretty much what I said, and erm, she kind of was like, ok, and, that was it really! The story kind of escalated from there.

Interviewer- So would you guys like a chart battle with the Spice Girls?

Kian - Yeah

[guys laughing]

Mark - I think it's a bit, it's a bit of fun, y'know what I mean? Like the last time it happened between us and them, it was all so serious, y'know, and people took it really seriously and maybe if we were rock bands or whatever there might be more reason to take it seriously but it's just a bit of pop music and it's a bit of a laugh..er..like we take our album seriously, but, like... y'know, I don't think that at this stage we really kind of care for getting into arguments with the Spice Girls or anybody.

Kian - It's nothing to do with them.

Mark - But it'd be a bit of fun like last year we had a chart battle, nearly every year, cos that time of year when you're releasing there's always someone with a big album out and for some reason..like last year it was Oasis and there was a big thing in the Bizarre column in particular, erm, through Victoria Newton, just making a big deal of Westlife vs. Oasis and stuff.. and, y'know, it actually ended up being quite funny, at the start of the week we were going "why do people not like us so much" and then by the end of the week we were, "do you know what, this is fantastic", cos it's actually

Nicky - You can't stop beat us

Mark - it's actually creating much more awareness for our album which is fantastic and, erm, and also it's just a bit of fun and we ended up coming out looking better than anyone in that situation cos we whipped everyone so it was great.
