Nicky Interview

from Australian TV Week, 4th November 2000

AS ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST SUCCESSFUL GROUPS, WESTLIFE HAVE HAD THEIR FAIR SHARE OF FAME BUT, ACCORDING TO NICKY BRYNE FROM THE GROUP, THEY'VE REALLY JUST FIVE REGULAR IRISH LADS........

If you had told the Westlife boys two years ago that they'd be one of the most successful groups in the world they probably would have laughed in your face. But, two years after they released 'Swear It Again', these boys have entered the record books by having a whopping six consecutive number ones in the UK - something that not even 'The Beatles' we're able to do during their career.

"It's crazy, isn't it," says Nicky, "although my dad refuses to believe that because he's a huge Beatles fan."

Despite their fame, Nicky says the success hasn't changed them.

"We've never really let it affect us. We just try to enjoy it because we know it could end tomorrow."

While the boys remain unspoilt by their fame, it has enabled them to work with the world's top stars, including Mariah Carey.

"When we got the opportunity to work with Mariah we couldn't believe it,: Nicky adds, "She was really professional yet totally down to earth. It was great to work with her."

The success of the collaboration, a cover version of Phil Collins ' Against All Odds', has surprise the boys.

"We didn't get a chance to promote it because Mariah wasn't available , so it was a surprise when it went to number one," he admits candidly.

"And we're really happy for Mariah that it went to number one, because she hasn't had a number one in the UK for a long time. If she can help us in the US (with the single), then we'll be really happy."
