Westlife Uncovered
News of the World November 3rd 2000
WESTLIFE are heading for a sensational SEVENTH No1 in a row on Sunday with their new single My Love.
Now the five Irish lads – Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Bryan McFadden and Nicky Byrne – have dropped their guard - and their trousers - to reveal their thoughts on fame, money, love and being in the mega band.
I'd love to marry
my girl Georgina
NICKY BYRNE reckons he could be the first of the Westlife boys to break a million hearts and marry.
The oldest of the group at 22, he has been dating Georgina Ahern – daughter of Irish PM Bertie – for six years.
He tells me: “I’d love to marry her. It is something we have talked about and I think it will happen.
“She’s my backbone and that’s what makes it hard when I’m away.
“She is based in Dublin and has flown all over the world to meet me. She is a very special girl.”
Georgina is Nicky’s shoulder to cry on when the pressures of fame get to him. He revealed he gets abuse on the streets but he tries to shrug it off.
The handsome singer from Dublin, so easily recognisable with that blond, tousled hair flopping on his face, is used to being in the public eye.
Dating Georgina from an early age, he also won honours with Leeds United as their youth team goalkeeper.
He and Paul Robinson, now first team keeper, would battle for places.
Nicky says: “I was watching him against Manchester United the other day and I was quite jealous.
“I thought, ‘I really wanted to be there in the No1 shirt.’ I really miss it.
“We were always fighting for each other’s place and I was better in some ways. When I saw him playing against Barcelona I thought, ‘That could be me.’
"What’s ironic, I suppose, is that most footballers want to be pop stars so perhaps the grass is always greener on the other side.
“I played with Leeds United regulars Gary Kelly and Harry Kewell and I feel very proud of them and still see them.”
