Can't Lose What You Never Had

(based on a fan fic by Anna Wilkinson)

When agreed to a family holiday to Ireland, she didn't know who she'd meet, and that romance would take place...

"If you come on holiday, we'll take you to see Westlife."
I jumped at that chance! I knew it was blackmail, but I also knew they wouldn't take me to see my most favourite band in the universe otherwise. "OK. But it better be worth it." "You never know. You might even bump into Shane there!" my joked. "Ha, ha! I nearly forgot to laugh there!" I said sarcastically.
We left on a Saturday and took a ferry to Dublin. We were going to go round all of Ireland, and I couldn't wait until we got to Sligo. My might well be right!!
My mum let us stay in Sligo for two weeks of our four week holiday, while her and dad went off each day. I was left with my for company.
One day, while mum and dad were out, I told my I was going out to the shops. stayed in and watched telly.
I went down to the newsagents, and bought some chocolate and a magazine. As I was walking out, someone bumped into me, and I fell to the floor. They held out a hand, and I took it. I looked up. I couldn't believe my eyes! It was Shane Filan! My was right!
"Sorry," he said. His voice made me melt. He stared into my eyes. I nearly fainted. "Forgot what I came in for now. Wanna come outside?" he asked. Well, what was I gonna say, "Oh, no thanks"? Yeah right!
"Yeah, uh, sh-sh-sure," I said
We walked around for a bit, chatting, then we sat down on a park bench. He took my hand. He pulled me back up again, saying, "I have horses. Wanna go for a ride?" We ran to his house, and he let me ride one of his horses. It was amazing. I told him everything. Over the next two days, we knew each other like we had grown up together. On Wednesday, four days after I had come to Sligo, Shane told me something. ", I want you to come with me. To my special place." He took me to a clearing in some woods. He said he'd never taken anyone there before. Then he lent over me. He bent his head down, and kissed me. My heart melted. We stayed kissing for what seemed like hours. When we broke, I kept my eyes closed. I could feel him sitting close to me. I could hear his breathing. He took my hand, kissed it, and put it over his heart. It was beating so fast. "Feel that?" he asked. I nodded. "That's how fast my heart has been beating from the moment I saw you. And what I'm going to say now might sound familiar. Here goes." He didn't say it, he sung it. I noticed what it was from the words 'Baby you're so beautiful.' It was my favourite song - Can't Lose What You Never Had. I closed my eyes, but they flung right back open when he got to 'Now I'm gonna confess that I love you.' Now I knew what he was getting at. He was saying he loved me, and that he couldn't lose me, because I wasn't his to lose. When he finished, I stared at him. He stared back for a moment, then kissed me again.

We stayed close for the remaning time I was going to spend in Sligo. The day before I was due to leave was so long. Shane and I kept hugging, kissing, telling each other not to forget to phone.
We were outside my hotel when Shane said it. ", I want you to stay. Your parents could pick you up before they leave." "I can't Shane, I can't." "Why not?" "They won't have it. We were only meant to stay here for two days, but I begged them for two weeks because I thought I might see my favourite band hanging around. I never thought it'd happen, but it did. I'm sorry. I promise to phone though." He'd burst by my last sentence. He held me tight, crying into my sweat shirt. I cried into his, and it started to rain. But we still stood there. We didn't care.

I saw Shane and the boys before we left. He cried. The others comforted him, and, as we drove away, I looked back, and saw him standing on his own, holding his mobile up. It meant 'ring me'.
As soon as we got to our new and final destination, I did. He never picked up.
But still, when I look at my posters on my wall at home, I look into his eyes, and imagine him looking at a photo of us together. I think he still loves me, but just as a friend. He never rang me back, so I figured he needed his space.

A year later.

I was screaming my heart out. Finally, I was at the best concert in the world. Front row seats and everything. I looked up as he sang. He looked back at me, and I realised he hadn't forgotten. He'd just needed time.
Shane and I kept in touch from then on, and we've never looked back.
