(the story has a better effect if you're playing the song as you're reading the story)
I was struggling with my three grocery bags as I was walking down the cosy streets of Sligo. "Why couldn't I have taken the car instead?" I mumbled to myself and almost dropped one of my bags. I didn't have time to take it slow. I had to go home and cook a fancy dinner and then get ready for my date. I had a best friend Berit, who was from Denmark and since Melissa couldn't pronounce her name, I just called her B. Well, B had sat up a blind date for me. "You need to go out more," she had said. "You can't always sit here with your books and read, as your friend I can't allow that anymore". So B talked to her big brother, who knew a guy around my age and he was suppose to be really nice and, luckily, really handsome. He was supposed to be at her apartment at 7PM, and now it was already 4.30PM. 10 minutes later I was home, and then it was time to hurry. I threw the turkey in the oven, sat the clock to ring an hour later, and went out in the bathroom to take a shower. A half hour later, I stood in front of my closet, looking at my clothes. "Oh no. I have nothing to wear," I said. When the clock started ringing, I had taken a long black dress and a black see-trough cardigan on. It looked good and I was pleased. I went out to the kitchen and made the rest of the meal. At 6.45PM I was all set for my mystery date. At 7.55PM the doorbell. I took a deep breath and opened the door. Outside stood a man in a black tox. He had dark hair and blue eyes. I'm sure that many girls would find him attractive, 'cause he wasn't ugly, but he wasn't my type. "Hi" he said and smiled. "You're looking for a date?" I laughed and said: "Yeah actually I am. Would you like to be my date?" "My pleasure" he said. "My name is Mark Feehily by the way" "I'm Melissa Miller" I said and showed him in. "Come on in" "Thank you" he said and handed her a bouquet of daffodils. "Thank you. They're beautiful" "Almost every girl likes daffodils" Mark said. "What a cool place you have here" "Thanks" I said. "It cost a fortune tooo. I'm still paying for it" He laughed. "I can understand that. By the way, what's that lovely smell?" "That's my turkey" I said and went out in the kitchen. "You can sit down on the table and I'll be right there". "Okay" he said. He was actually really nice, but I couldn't picture myself falling for him. I wanted someone, who'd sweep me of my feet, someone that make me love him the first time I laid my eyes on him, and I couldn't picture Mark doing that, but he could probably be my best boy friend, not boyfriend, but boy friend. I came into to the table with two plates of hot turkey and vegetables. "That looks great" Mark said. That whole evening we said and talked, discussed, laughed and talked about big subjects. "Buy the way, did I tell you that I am in a band?" he asked "Noo. Are you really?" I said. "Yeah, we were sat together at a audition, by we knew each other before that. We all played in the musical "Grease" Do you know it" "Yeah of course I know it! I love John Travolta in that movie," I said. "Who played Danny" "Actually one of the lads in the band. He's name is Shane, and he's really great. So is Kian, the other lad. We are supposed to add two other guys to the band. They live in Dublin, but we haven't met them yet. Hey, you should meet the guys you know, Shane and Kian". "I'd like that" I said. They were probably nice guys. "When would it be convenient?" "How about tomorrow?" he said. I laughed. He sounded so eager. "Okay, that sounds great. You can come and pick me up here around 3PM. I have a short day at the university tomorrow". Then it was time for Mark to leave. He had to get up early tomorrow he said. When he was about to leave, I gave him a kiss on the cheek and said: "You're a really nice guy, Mark and I would like it if we can be friends?" "I'd like that too" he said and smiled. "See you tomorrow" he said and left. I closed the door and smiled. Maybe there hadn't been any sparks between me and Mark, but at least I'd made a new friend "So?" That was the first thing B said, when she saw me the next day. "So, what?" I said and smiled. She was so easy to tease. "You know what I'm talking about" she said. "How was the date with Mark?" "Oh, so you know him?" I said, still smiling. "Come on, Mel! Tell me!" she said. "Okay I said," I said. "He's a really nice guy..." "Yes?" she said. "...but he's not for me. I'd rather just be friends with him" "Yeah yeah, you always just wanna be friends with them" B said. "I'm meeting some of he's friends today," I said. "Great! Maybe you'll like one of them" she said. "B!!" I was looking forward to meeting Mark's friends, and when I got home, Mark was already there. "You couldn't wait, ha?" I laughed. "Well, I really want you to meet my friends" he laughed. "Are you ready?" "I'm just gonna leave my bag in the apartment". I said. A few minutes later we were on our way in his car. It was an old piece of junk, but it could drive. "What are you thinking about?" he asked. "Well, I know it's silly, but I'm a little nervous about meeting your friends". I said and looked at him. "Don't be," he said. "They're really nice guys and I'm sure they're gonna like you too". "I really hope so," I said. "This is the first time I've ever personally met a band". Mark laughed. About 20 minutes later, we came to a big house with two storeys. "Its Kian's parents house" Mark said. "Oh I see" I said and got out of the car. I waited for Mark. My heart was nearly up in my throat. It was really stupid, but I always felt that way, when I was going to meet new people. I walked along with Mark around the house and down in the basement and inside a corridor until we came to a door. Mark walked in and said: "Well guys, here she is!" How embarrassing!! I walked in and said: "Hi guys. I'm Melissa" "Hi Melissa" one of the guys said, "I'm Kian". He walked over to me and shook my hand. "So Mark got you over here. That's not something that usually happens. He has to force the girls" "Oh ha ha" said Mark and sat sown on a stool. Then I saw the other guy. He had been standing in the other end of the huge basement, but then he turned around and walked towards me. He was...I could never describe what I felt when I saw him. He had dark hair and the most beautiful eyes. I always notice guy's eyes. If a guy has ugly eyes, I won't have anything to do with on the dating area, but this guy...You could get lost in his eyes forever. He was incredibly handsome. "Oh I see you've noticed Shane" Mark said. I realised that I was practically drooling over him. I blushed, but Shane just smiled and took my name and said: "Hi. I'm Shane". "Ohm... I'm Mel...Melissa" Oh my god I was such an idiot! When Shane saw Melissa, he felt there was something about her that just, well he didn't know what it was, but she was really beautiful, that was for sure. She had long blond hair and blue eyes; just the type of girl he didn't go after. He liked brunettes better, but this girl... When she stuttered, he only liked her more. It was so sweet. "So Mark told us about your blind date" Shane said. "Oh that" Melissa laughed. "Well, I wouldn't call it a date, more an opportunity to get a friend, right Mark" "Yep" Mark said. "And what an opportunity that was". Shane was a bit jealous of Mark. If only it was him, who had been on that date...wait a minute! He didn't even know this girl and already he was jealous. He started smiling at himself. "What's the matter, man" Kian asked. "Nothing" Shane said. "I just thought of something funny. Why don't you sit down Melissa" "Thank you" she said and sat down in an old sofa. Shane sat next to her. "So when are suppose to meet the other members?" Melissa asked "In two weeks" Kian said. "We're all pretty nervous, 'cause if we gonna get success, we're gonna spend 24 hours a day with them" "I can see that" Melissa said. Shane caught himself staring at her and looked away before she could notice it, but Mark had seen it. Shane could see it in his expression. To change the subject Shane asked: "So Melissa, do you like pop music like ours?" "Oh, you play pop. Yeah, I'm fan of Backstreet Boys, Boyzone and a previous fan of Take That" They all laughed and the ice was broken. They talked for the rest of the day until it 11PM and Melissa had to go home. "Come by any time you want" Kian said and gave her a hug. "Thanks Kian" she said. Then she turned at Shane. "Goodbye Shane" she said. "Goodbye Melissa. I hope to see you soon" Shane said and gave her a hug. "Me too" she said and turned at Mark. "You wanna go now?" "Do I have a choice?" he laughed. "If you wanna drive me home, you don't" she smiled, and after a last goodbye, Mark and Melissa left. "She was nice, ha?" Kian said and turned at Shane. "Yeah, she really was" Shane said. "So, you liked the guys" Mark asked, while they were driving. "Yeah, they were really nice" I said. I kept thinking of Shane. Of his eyes, his voice, his hair, everything about him. I must have gone crazy. How could I act like a crazy teenager, when I'd only met him once? Well, I didn't have an answer to that, the only thing I knew was that I couldn't stop thinking about him. "And Shane was nice too, ha?" he asked. "Yeah...I guess so," I said. I was getting a little precocious, but he didn't say anything else. We started talking about other things, and before I knew it, I was home. "Thanks for the drive Mark" I said. "No problem" he said. "I'll call you soon". "You do that" I laughed and closed the door. As he drove away, I'd got the feeling that Mark was wondering about something... I kept meeting the guys every day the next two weeks, and after a week or so, B was introduced to the guys as well. She thought that they were all grand, but that Shane was gorgeous and she wanted, as she said: "Get him on the hook" A danish expression, I think, but I didn't like that she fancied Shane so much. Anyway, I was in that luck that my spring break was in the same time that the guys were going to Dublin. They asked me if I would join them, and of course I said yes. So a few days later, I was on the way to Dublin with the three guys. Now it wasn't me, who was nervous, but the other three. I couldn't help laughing, when Kian started getting stressed. He talked like a waterfall, babbling. "I'm sure that we're not gonna like them, and then our working relationship won't work and then we're gonna split up even before we started, and then we're never gonna get famous and I'm gonna spend the rest of my life scrubbing floors". "Relax, Kian" Mark. "We haven't even met them yet" but I could see that Mark was extremely nervous too. But Shane seemed very relaxed and that was strange, 'cause he was the one had been the most nervous. In the aeroplane there was only room for two in each row. Mark and Kian automatically sat next to each other, so I was gonna sit next to Shane. That didn't bother me, 'cause Shane and me had become very good friend. We had so many things to talk about together and we never seemed to run out of topics. So we had a trip were we talked and laughed. Then we arrived to Dublin and were shown the way to where we were supposed to go. At first I offered to stay outside and wait, but all three wanted me to go with them. When we got there and were shown into a room, the two other guys were standing there. "Guys, this is Bryan and Nicky, the new members of your band" the guy, who had held the audition said. The five of them met on the halfway and shook hands and introduced themselves. I couldn't help smiling. They all seemed to hit it off. "Oh, I almost forgot" Shane said and waved me over. "Guys, this is Melissa" "Hi" I said. I didn't know what else to say. "Why hello" said the guy, who I think, was Bryan. "How you doing?" said Nicky. Then we all sat down and got to know each other better, and they were very nice guys. They became good friends real quick. We stayed in Dublin for a few days. We went shopping, dining, going to movies or just hung out. Then we all had to go back to Sligo. I had to, 'cause my spring break was nearly over, and the, 'cause they all had to do some things in Sligo. Again I sat next to Shane on the way home. At one time he fell to sleep and I just sat and looked at him. He had the face of an angel, and the voice too. I'd heard them rehearsing back in Dublin and they were really good together, but when Shane sang, it truly sounded like an angel. I knew that they were gonna be big some day. A few months went by. The band had called themselves I.O.YOU. It wasn't a bad name, I just wasn't sure that the fans would like it. The guys got better and better at the vocals and singing with harmony and finally, one day, they were discovered by Louis Walsh, the actual manager of Boyzone. All the guys were so happy and I was too. And they changed their name again to Westside. At least that was better than the first one. But then, because of something about, that another group had that name first they called themselves Westlife. That was a good name. Then just out of the blue, they got a massive hit. The song was called "Swear It Again" and it was really good. Suddenly they were famous, but it didn't change them. Shane and me got closer and closer for every day that passed by. Sure, I was also very good friends with the rest of the bunch, but with Shane it was special. Every time he passed by, gave me a hug or laughed his wonderful laughter, my knees got weak and I was about to fall. "Shane. Come on man, are gone again?" Bryan was shaking in Shane, who'd gone to that place again were no one could reach him. "Sorry?" said Shane. "My god, Shane, what are you thinking of, when you go blank like that?" Bryan asked, a little bit annoyed. "Nothing in particular" Shane said. He wouldn't tell him that he was thinking of Melissa, again. He couldn't stop thinking about her. When the group sang their love songs, it was her he was thinking of, even when he was eating, he thought of her. It couldn't go on like this. He had to talk to someone. Mark! "Excuse me, Bryan, there's something I have to do". "Yeah sure, man. Do what you gotta do" Bryan said, who was already caught in the soccer game on the TV. Shane went out and found Mark, busy with rehearsing his vocals. "Mark, can I talk to you for a second?" Shane asked. "Yeah, of course. What's up?" Mark asked. "Okay, this is just a hypothetical question..." Shane said. "Sure" Mark smiled, but Shane didn't notice it. "Okay, suppose there is this guy, who keeps thinking of this girl. He just can't stop thinking about her, no matter what he does. And he just wanna be with her all the time. He doesn't care what he does. What do you suppose that could be?" "Well it's a wild guess, but don't you think it's love?" Mark smiled. "Love?" Shane said. "Love? Yeah, love, it's gotta be love, he loves her!!" "Well, what are you waiting for?" Mark said. "Go tell her. She's waited for it for a long time". Shane looked at Mark with a stupid grin. "What do you mean?" "Oh come on, it's obvious" Mark smiled. "You and Melissa have been in love for, I don't know how long. It's just that none of you had the guts to tell it to one another, or it's just that none of you have realised it until now". "Yeah, you're probably right" Shane said. "But I'm gonna go and tell her right now" Just before Shane left, Mark managed to yell: "Good luck, pal!!" I had planned to have a cosy night with B, were we were gonna eat candy and watch the latest movies. When I turned on the TV, I saw that one of the channels was showing Westlife's video "Swear It Again". I smiled. They had reached their goal, and they deserved it too. I sat down to see the video. Shane was so handsome in that movie, but then again, he was always handsome. Then B came out from the kitchen, and saw me watching the video. She smiled and said: "What are you watching?" I hadn't seen her coming in. "Oh, just a music video". I turned over to the video channel. "Which movie do you wanna see first?" Then the doorbell rang. "I'll get it," I said. "You do that, since you're the one who live here," B said. I chose to overhear that and opened the door. Outside stood Shane. He looked nervous and shy at the same. That was so sweet! "Hi Mel," he said. "I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second?" "Sure" I said. "Come on in" "No thanks" he said. I was confused. "Yeah, it sounds weird, but I wanna take you to a special place. "Okay. Can you give me a second?" I said. "Sure" I closed the door, and went in the living room, were B was already started on the movies. "Why couldn't we have rented one with danish subtitles? I hate it. When there isn't subtitles on" "B, is it okay with you if I go out for a while?" "Why?" she asked and looked at me. "You see, Shane is standing outside, and he wants to talk to me". "Okay" she said. "Say hi to him from me". She was such a good friend. "I will. Be back soon" I went out, took my coat and walked out again. "I should say hi from B," I said. "Oh, do you have company? It can wait what I have to say..." "No, that's alright" I said. "She understands. Where are we going?" "It's a surprise" he smiled, and got out to his car. On the whole trip, he didn't say a thing, and I was getting a little bit nervous, if it was something really serious he wanted to tell. When he finally stopped the car, we were at Sligo Beach. "What are we doing here?" "Come on Mel," he smiled and got out of the car. Well, what could I do? I got out of the car, took his arm and walked out to the beach. It was a full moon, and it made the water so beatiful. "I used to play here all the time, when I was a little kid," Shane suddenly said. "Me too" I said. "Really?" "Yeah, I used to played here with B". "How richly bizarre" he said, and I laughed. He was always so funny. Suddenly he turned at me. He was so beautiful in the moonlight. His hair was playing with the wind and his eyes looked like diamonds. I could have kissed him right on the spot, but I controlled myself. Shane took a deep breath and started speaking: "Okay, it's hard to say this, so could you not say anything until I'm finish?" I nodded. He took my hands. I could feel him trembling. "Melissa" he said. "Ever since the first time I saw you, there has been something about you, that I just can't resist. You've always been special to me, more than special actually. I guess what I'm trying to say is that: I love you, Melissa. It's taken me so long to realise it, but I think that I have always been in love with you. A picture of you, that is. You are my dream girl. You're all I've always thought that I didn't want, but you are my dream girl, and I love you". He stopped. "Oh Shane" I said and the tears were rolling down my cheek. "I love you too. I've loved since the first time I saw you. You have sweeped me off my feet, and I will never stop loving you". He looked so relieved. Then, slowly, he bended over and kissed me. I was still crying, but I was so happy as I've ever been in my life. "Melissa" he said. "Will you marry me. And be the only one for me for the rest of our lives?" "Yes, Shane I would love to marry you" I said and we kissed again. The next month was the happiest time of my life. Shane and I were so happy together. We started to get in the weekly magazines. The headlines were "Sorry girls! Shane is taken". I didn't like the way that they made it that big a deal, but as long as I was with Shane, I didn't care. We had already sat the date to be a fall wedding, so there a few months still. One day, I was going to get something for Shane in Louis Walsh's office, so I knocked on the door, and he said "Come in" I entered and said: "I'm suppose to get some lyrics for Shane, and I was told that you have them. "Yes they're right here" he said and handed them to me. "Thank you" I said and was about to leave, when Louis said: "Wait a minute, Melissa. Sit down for a minute. I have to talk to you" "Okay" I said and sat down. "So, you and Shane are engaged?" he said. I nodded happily. "That's nice," he said. "But do you know, that our fan list is gone down, because of all this PR about you and Shane?" "I didn't know that" I said. "You see, all the girls out there, most of them fancy Shane the most, and they don't wanna be fan of a band, where their fave Westlife is engaged". "What can I do about that?" I asked. "You love Shane, right?" "Of course I do" I said. "And you wanna do what's best for him?" "Right". "Then you'll break up the engagement" "What" I said. "Is this a joke?" "I'm dead serious. If break off the engagement, then all Shane's fans will come back, and they'll have success over your wildest dreams" "I'm not breaking off the engagement!" I said. "I love Shane and he loves me" "Don't you think, you're a little bit selfish?" Louis said. "Think of all the success they'll get. If you love him, you'll do what's best for him. God day" He went back to his paper work, and I slammed the door behind me. What a nerve he had! Telling me that I was selfish. But was I? It was true, that most of the girls fancied Shane the most, and they probably would leave the band, when they found out that he was engaged. They would have so much success if Shane were single. But still. Nicky had a girlfriend, and they weren't less successful because of that. But Nicky wasn't as popular as Shane was. At the time I got home, I'd made my decision. I loved Shane. No doubt about it, but it wasn't enough. He needed that success and I was in the way. So the next, when I was sure that he wasn't home, I locked my self in, took my things and wrote him a note. I didn't have the courage to tell him face to face. The note went something like this: My beloved Shane. You know I love you and I always will, but I won't stand in the way of your happiness and success. So I'm going home to my parents, and I don't want you to track me down. You know, I only want you to be happy. I know that you'll say that you are happy with me, and you probably would for a while, but then, when your success would fall, you would blame me, and stop loving me, and I that is the only thing, that I can't handle. I want you to know that I will always love you, and no one else. Yours forever Melissa Next to the note, she left her engagement ring, what they had been out and buy together. She started crying, but she knew, that it was the only right thing to do. She stormed out of the house before she'd regret her choice. "Shane, I know it's hard, but you have to move on. If you see it this way, we have never been this successful and...What are doing?" Nicky was sitting next to Shane, who very busy. "I'm writing" Shane said. It had been very hard, talking to him ever since, Melissa had left him. For weeks after he wouldn't even talk to anyone, but then he started talking sometimes, but only as short as possible. He heart could never be repaired again, at least not by anyone but Melissa. He still couldn't understand why she had left him. They had loved each other so much, and he still loved her just as much as then. But four months had passed. Shane hadn't tried to get in touch with Melissa, because of her request, but he wasn't a whole person anymore. He still thought about her all the time, and only wanted to get her back. "Come on, you two, we've gotta rehearse for the big show tomorrow" Kian yelled. "Be there in two senconds" Shane said, and scribbled something down. "What are you writing?" Nicky asked. "I'll tell you in a moment" Shane siad. "Done!" he said and started walking. "Come on Nicky" "What was that Shane?" Nicky asked again. "I told you, I'll tell you in a moment" Shane said. "Now we gotta rehearse". "Oh come on Mel. You've gotta go to the concert with me" B said. "No, and don't know how you can even ask me that" I said, going through my biology book. I was still crushed over that horrible break-up with Shane. How could I have done that to him? At least I could have told him in person instead of just writing a note. He was bound to hate me now. "Mel. He won't be able to see you with those huge lamps shining in his eyes. And besides, when you're sitting in the middle of 10.000 people, how will he notice you?" "I just don't wanna see him again, that's all" I said and closed my books and looked at her. "I did a horrible thing to him. And besides, I still love him, so if I see him again I'll run back into his arms and make a total fool of myself, when he rejects me" "If you start to run, I'll hold you back" she laughed. I didn't. "Oh come on. That was a little funny" "I don't think so" I said. "I'm sorry," she said. "But won't you at least go as a favour? I promise I'll pay you back!" "Well, then you gotta do it big time" I said. "Of course. So you'll go?" "Yeah. I'll go" I sighed. "Oh thank you, thank you, thank you" she said and hugged me. "No problem" I said. I walked around rest of the day and next day, just thinking of Shane. Sure, I'd seen him many times in posters, in talk shows or in music videos, and each time, I nearly cried. I missed him so much, that it hurt all the time, but I knew that I'd done the right thing. They'd been so much more successful since that time, then I was with him. But I didn't wanna see him tonight, but now I'd promised it to B, and a promise is a promise. So the next day, I found some close, nothing fancy but still not every-day close, and drove over to pick B up. "So, are you excited?" I asked. "Yeah, are you crazy?! They're suppose to be fantastic live," she said. "Yeah, they really are," I said. "Oh yeah I'd forgot. You have been to almost all their concerts. " B said. "You're so lucky". "Yeah, I guess so". I said. When we got to the concert hall, I started to get nervous, I mean really nervous. "My God Mel, you're trembling" B said. "I'm afraid to see him". "We'll leave if it gets too much for you" she said. I nodded and we went in and found our seats. Then the light toned out and there they were. We had good seats. I sat close enough to see them probably, but they still couldn't see me. I saw Shane. I had been so long since I've seen him last in person, and I'd forgotten how charming he was. Suddenly I started crying. Not loudly, the tears just fell down my cheek, so B didn't notice. She was to busy listening to them. I wanted to leave the whole time, but B seemed to have such a good time, that I didn't wanna disturb her, but I couldn't stop crying. I loved him so much, and I just wanted to beg for forgiveness, but I was so afraid of his rejection that I'd probably never have the courage to be with him. It was nearly the end of the show. Then took his microphone and walked closer to the audience. He was gonna say something: "You all know that I was engaged a few months ago, right?" Everybody was yelling, but I couldn't hear what. I just wanted to leave, but then it would seem too obvious. B stared at me as if she gonna say: "What's going on?" I looked up at Shane again. "Well, for some reason she left me, but you girls out there, I want you to know that I'm still in love with her" People were still yelling, but I didn't pay attention to it anymore. I just looked at Shane. Did he really still love me? After all I've done to him? "I've written a song to express my feelings to her," Shane said. "Melissa, I hope you're out there. I love you" The other boys came up to him, and Shane started singing: It's good to know I'll have your love, which ever way the wind blows A guiding light That will shine on, through the darkest nights Now I was crying so much, that B could hear it too. I buried my head in my hands. "What's the matter. Mel?" she asked. I looked at her, and she could see that I was smiling. "Nothing" I said. "Absolutely nothing" I looked at Shane again as they kept singing: You lift me up on the wings of love Taking me higher still with every touch Whenever I'm weak, honey You take me there again On the wings love I looked at Shane. Was that a tear I could see in his eye? Yes it was, he was crying too. So he really meant it. That emptiness, that had been in my heart was suddenly filled, and I smiled as I saw Shane singing again: It's all I need When you hold me, and whisper tenderly That I'm the one, you'll love forever What else could I want That song was their last act, and when they were finished they said goodnight and left. "B" I said. "I gotta go and..." "Yeah I know," she said. "You go along. I'm driving home". "Thanks" I said and gave her a hug. I went out backstage. "Can I see your pass?" said the security guy. "I don't have any, but I'm Melissa, and I just wanna talk to Shane" "Yeah, like I haven't heard that before" the man said. "You're not getting without a pass" "Melissa, what are you doing here?" It was Mark, who was standing on the other side. "I just wanna talk to Shane, but I can't get in" I said. "Oh I see" Mark said. "It's alright Bubba. I know her". "I was just doing my job," the man said. "I understand," I said, and then I turned at Mark. "Where is Shane?" "I'll show you" Mark said, and started walking. "Melissa, you gotta be gentle with him. He hasn't been himself since you left him". "Of course. I've been a wreck myself" I said. "I can see that" he smiled, then he saw my swollen eyes. Then he stopped at a door. "He's in here" Mark said.
