Fans meetings with the lads...

December 13th 1999, York, UK
By Becca, bigphil@jorech.karoo.co.uk

On Monday 6th December 1999, my friend Rachael entered a competition on our local radiostation to win tickets to a private Westlife concert. At school that day everyone was asking if it was her that they had heard.
The radio station had asked her to ring back the next day to be in with a chance to meet them aswell. So on Tuesday 7th I listened to the radio in the morning and I heard my friend answer the question, "Name one of Westlife's managers." She said Ronan Keating and so I was so happy for her to get this chance. That day at school everyone was being her 'friend' but she chose her sister, myself and our friend Lisa.
On Monday 13th December we left school at lunch to get ready at my house so that Rachael's dad could pick us up at 2:00pm.
We got to York at about 3:00pm. had something to eat and took a steady walk to Exhibition Square - where it would be held.
There were about 10 people waiting outside. As we were waiting, a blonde haired man walked swiftly through the small crowd and into the building. After he had gone everyone realised that it had been Nicky and we were like, "Was that Nicky - Oh My God!", "That was Nicky!" ( it was really funny!)
Altogether 12 people were going to meet them but the private concert was for about 100 people.
We went in at 4.30pm and sat at tables. We were meant to meet them before the concert but they had to do an interview downstairs so we were going to meet them afterwards instead. They finally came on stage at about 6.30pm.
They sang 'Swear it again', 'If I let you go', 'Flying without wings', 'More than words', 'Seasons in the sun' and 'I have a dream'. It was funny because the stage wasn't closed in but there was an overhang at the back so when Bryan stepped back he hit his head (not hard though) - he just shook it off.
At the end, they left the stage and one of the radio DJ's came on and asked us if we would rather Westlife went to Mc'Donalds for something to eat or come back on and sing some more - so of course we shouted for them to come on.
They sang again and we crowded around the stage so that we could reach out and touch them (even though my friends and I were 6 feet away from them anyway).
When most people left, the competition winners stayed behind and we were taken down to a Tudor style room. Westlife, security and other people were walking around talking. We split up and Lisa and I first went to Shane. He was wearing a black top and dark grey, smart trousers. He was sat on a table and is soooo cute!
He signed my Westlife album and I took a picture of him and Lisa. We then went to Bryan, who was sat down on a chair (and was also wearing black). I asked for his autograph and he said I was quiet! - I just said yeah (quietly). Rachael wanted to take a picture of Bryan, myself and Lisa but he drifted off and started singing to himself and tapping his legs to a beat. Rachael had to cough loudly to get his attention.
Next, Lisa took a photo of Rachael, her sister and Bryan and Bryan kept pulling faces at Rachael's sister - I couldn't help but laugh!
(At this time I absolutely loved Mark) so I was nervous meeting him but reluctantly Lisa pushed me to him and he smelt lovely! He was wearing all black and had a dark blue-black jacket on. He signed my album and then Rachael took a picture of Mark, Lisa and myself. I stood next to Lisa so suddenly I felt this hand on my waist and it was Mark pulling me closer! (I could have died then and there!)
Next we went to Kian. I got his autograph and took a picture of him and Lisa. He was wearing black trousers and a medium grey top. By the time I got to Nicky (also wearing black) he was talking and trying to pack his bag as it was time to go and the others were calling for him. He was in so much of a rush that he knocked over a bottle of water and orange peel all over the place. It was really funny because the others kept calling him to get over there. There were group photos taken of the band, security, DJ's etc. on the steps leading up to the door (which Lisa took loads of) and then they left.
After that day I fell in love with them and I voted for them to win Record of the Year for Flying without Wings (and just loved that little smile Mark did right near 'You're my special thing...' )
On Wednesday 7th March, 2001, I went with Lisa, her mum and our friend Leanne to the Westlife concert at Sheffield and it is fantastic. It's a must see (especially the performance of 'When You're Looking Like That'!)
